Woman Crossing Long Island Roadway Struck, Killed By SUV

A woman crossing a busy Long Island roadway was struck and killed by an SUV.

It happened on Sunday, Jan. 12 at approximately 6:10 p.m. in Shoreham.

The woman was crossing westbound Route 25A, in front of the Rocky Point Fire Department, when she was struck by a 2018 Hyundai SUV at approximately 6:10 p.m., Suffolk County Police said.

The woman, who has yet to be identified by police, was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson where she died from her injuries. 

The driver of the Hyundai, Paula Avent, 36, of Rocky Point, was alone in her vehicle and not injured, said police.

It is under investigation why the woman was crossing the road. The Hyundai was impounded for a safety check.
